Enterprise; Drive mapping; OS Vista->Win 7; Folder Redirection
I am looking to solve a problem I've been facing dealing with a strange occurrence of "missing" files when switching from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Ill lay out my situation: I have PCs that are running Windows Vista and want to migrate the user to a Windows 7 machine. The local machine doesnt keep any profile settings from the last machine, so it is a clean slate when they receive the PC. What Ive noticed is that when they look at their network drive some files gave changed to temp files, example: WRD8012.tmp. This would have taken place of an actual document that is no longer visible while on the Windows 7 machine. Currently I have a section on my server dedicated to saving documents from local PCs. Any document that is being saved (not save as) to the c: drive, which could fall under Mypictures/Mydocuments/etc, is being mapped to a network HDD. - Up to this point my path looks something like this: \\Filer\home\user$ At this point theres not a full Microsoft presences on the generated user directory. What I think I need to do is create another level above the user directory so that I can have a chance to modify/setup a group policy for the directory. - So the new path would be: \\filer\home\mydocuments\user$ Now Im not sure if this would help the issue of the files becoming temp files after migration, but I think this might prevent it from happening again if I migrate later on down the road. What Im looking for is, any insight on how to solve the file mapping issue or for any information regarding my idea for redirecting my directories.

Hi, Firstly, please let us know the following: 1. How do you migrate the user profiles? 2. Are the user accounts local ones or a reaming ones? 3. Do you mean that after doing a folder redirection, users can only see temp files? Have you checked whether the real files exist in your file server? Meanwhile, please check the permission of the real files. More information: Offline Files and Folder Redirection What's New in Folder Redirection and User Profiles Hope this helps. When I set up a new computer for a client, what I do is manually copy the user profile onto the new computer (would do this so they could still work on theirs during the day). The content that is saved to the Mydocuments in vista is mapped to be saved on a netapp server. Although user profiles do make a copy of themselves on the server storage, only the locally saved profile is used (so in short, no roaming profiles, just access to saved network documents). For your third question, yes and yes. But keep in mind that a large factor is that it is folder redirection and the problem is files being saved from a vista machine can't all be seen from a Win 7 Machine. The server runs on server 2k3 w/ netapp controller. Also if I were to look at a clients network HD from any other vista machine other then their own the files still seem to be healthy. Its only when I try with Win 7 that problems occur.

Hi, Since your profile is roaming profile, you needn't copy the profile from windows vista machine to new windows 7 machine. You just need to log on the windows 7 machine with the same user and it will automatically create the profile and download the profile data from the file server. Even if you would like to copy the profile, the correct step is like below: 1. Log on the windows 7 machine with the same user firstly. After that, it will create the profile and related registry for the user. 2. Then copy the profile on the windows vista machine to windows 7 machine. Hope the information could help you.
